Price range: $225.00 through $300.00

In this hands-on semester, teens will explore homesteading skills through caring for chickens, goats, and rabbits while learning practical tasks like hoof trimming, milking, and flock management. They’ll also dive into food preservation by making jelly, bread, and more from scratch, gaining both enrichment and real-world skills for sustainable living.

Location: Johnson Homestead, Anthony, NM
Ages: 13–18 (Middle & High School)

Program Pricing:

  • $300 per student for the full 9-week semester
  • 25% off for each additional sibling ($225/sibling)
  • Single class (drop-in): $40 per student (as space allows)
  • Sibling drop-in rate: $30 per student

  • Pay in full at registration
  • Or choose a payment plan: $150 due at registration$150 due by Week 5

Weekly Schedule:

This is a loose schedule. Everything on the farm depends on weather and other factors.

Week 1 (Sept 12): Welcome & Introduction to Homestead Skills

  • Orientation, tool safety, tour, farm chores, prepare a meal and goal setting

Week 2 (Sept 19): Goat Care & Milking Basics

  • Learn the basics of dairy goat care, milking, and sanitization, possibly butcher a goat.

Week 3 (Sept 26):  Gardening & Composting

  • Build garden beds, plant fall crops, and manage compost

Week 4 (Oct 17): Food Preservation: Water Bath Canning

  • Make jams or pickles and learn safe food storage methods

Week 5 (Oct 24): Sewing & Mending

  • Learn hand stitching, simple repairs, and how to read a pattern

Week 6 (Oct 31): Soap Making or Natural Products

  • Make goat milk soap or natural cleaners from scratch

Week 7 (Nov 14): Cooking & Baking

  • From-scratch recipes and kitchen skills teens can take into adulthood, we will learn all about sourdough as well.

Week 8 (Nov 21): Basic Carpentry & Tool Use

  • Learn how to use hand tools, measure, cut, and construct a small project

Week 9 (Dec 12): Small Engines & Simple Repairs

  • Learn engine basics and how to care for farm equipment

Dec 12, 3pm-6pm: Farm Christmas Celebration (Free event for all students)

  • A joyful celebration for all students to reflect on the season, share what they’ve learned, and enjoy Christmas crafts, potluck meal, and farm fun.
